FAMILY FARM LEAGUE ANNOUNCES OPEN HOUSE
Napa CA
The Family Farm League, a grassroots advocacy group dedicated simply to the production of food in the Napa Valley, will host an open house on Sunday, February 19 2006, at the new Rancho Gordo warehouse (1755 Industrial Way, #26) in Napa. The 3: 30 pm to 6:00 pm event will feature food prepared by the Vintage High School students who participate in the Seed-to-Table program and a seed exchange for home gardeners.
Several food producers, like Rancho Gordo, Long Meadow Ranch and Grandpa Jack's Farm, will be on hand to meet the community, talk about food issues and offer or exchange excess seeds for a seed exchange. Everyone is welcome to attend and all proceeds from the $4 admission fee will go directly to the Vintage High School Seed-to-Table program.
Membership in the Family Farm League is free and open to anyone who produces food, commercially or as a hobby, in the Napa Valley. The goal of the organization is to work as advocats for food concerns in the virtual monoculture of wine in Napa. Recognizing the importance of Napa's wine industry, the League's sole goal is to improve the genetic diversity of the valley.
League president, Lassa Skinner, sees the group as both an advocacy group and a resource for new farmers. "My personal goal is to make it as easy as possible for someone who shows an interest in agriculture to pursue their goals. It's not an easy route but it's incredibly rewarding and the benefits go far beyond the food produced for the grower and the community."
The Rancho Gordo showroom/warehouse has recently opened at 1755 Industrial Way, #26 (off of California, north end of Napa). Rancho Gordo's focus on heirloom vegetables, in partucular dried beans, has received recent press from magazines such as Sunset, Chow, Country Living and Chile Pepper. The company started at Napa's local farmers markets and now sells at the San Francisco Ferry building and via the company website at http://www.ranchogordo.com .
